Basilisco/Basilisk/Василиск (or how to run on water) is an investigation into the potential ability of human beings to run on water. Developed on Biryuchyi Island (Ukraine), in Turin, and Rome between 2017 and 2019. To achieve this seemingly impossible goal, the project faced a series of trials and difficulties, each of which provided valuable insights for further developments, in an attempt to perform an act that seemed impossible. Through a series of instructions related to the challenge of running on water, analyzed from multidisciplinary perspectives and fields, Basilisco lays the groundwork for a broader discussion on the challenge of transforming everything that seems impossible into something at least plausible, simply by shifting the viewpoint to other "domains." The five short essays by Cristiano Ghibaudo (professional coach), Riccardo Mangione (project manager), Daniele Sciannandrone (physicist), Gianni Magrin (theologian), Massimo Delfino, and Marco Isaia (herpetologist, ecologist), explore the theme of the project, giving rise to a detailed discussion on multiple levels. When, how, and in what way is the image of walking on water used and expressed at a theological level in different religions? Which animal species are capable of performing this action, and under what particular conditions are they forced to do so? What are the physical forces at play, and what are the prerequisites that would allow a person to run on water?… Resulting from research initiated in 2017 during a residency on the Ukrainian peninsula of Biruchiy, Basilisco presents texts in three languages (Italian, English, and Russian). Printed in Risograph, digital, and offset, the book contains two sections of illustrations by the artist, and its graphic design was curated by Friends Make Books of Turin. Basilisco is part of Franco Ariaudo's research as part of a broader project titled Faster than Christ, exhibited in Rome at COLLI spaces until May 18, 2019. The artist is already the author, along with Luca Pucci and Emanuele De Donno, of the book/research SPORTIFICATION eurovisions, performativity and playgrounds 1965-99 (2017), which ATP Diary has already covered in the past.
